History of Lopez Island Creamery

LOPEZ ISLAND CREAMERY was started in the mid 1990’s
by two women living on Lopez Island in Washington’s beautiful San Juan
Islands who loved ice cream. They purchased recipes
and a few pieces of equipment, and started learning. As time
went by, they created,
improved, modified and finally marketed
their product when they began selling ice
cream cones at nearby fairs and
events.
The business steadily grew as the quality of the ice cream
became known. When the original owners sought to move on, fellow Lopez Island
residents, Jan and Jim Bruce, took over LOPEZ ISLAND CREAMERY. They began widening
the market for LOPEZ ISLAND CREAMERY into local scoop shops, grocery stores, and restaurants,
while maintaining the superb quality of the original product
by using only the
best possible ingredients.
In 2005, LOPEZ ISLAND CREAMERY was moved to Fisherman
Bay Road, just south of Lopez Village on Lopez Island, and in 2008, distribution was expanded into the Seattle area where our ice-cream is now sold in several specialty and fine-food markets.
In 2010, we made the difficult decision to relocate to Anacortes, Washington on Fidalgo Island, which is part of the San Juan Archipelago. One of the deciding factors in this move was the desire to lessen our carbon footprint by decreasing the number of trips required to transport ingredients and the final procucts. This has allowed us to significantly decrease our fuel consumption.
Today, LOPEZ ISLAND CREAMERY is run by Alex and Ingrid Thieman.
Even though Jim and Jan have retired and turned the business over to Alex and Ingrid, they continue to sell LOPEZ ISLAND ice cream at local fairs and events.
As current owners, Alex and Ingrid are committed to:
- Maintaining the superb quality of the ice cream using all-natural and delicious ingredients
- Crafting and fine tuning recipes for Lopez Island Creamery’s core flavors and creating new specialty ice cream flavors like Anacortes Porter and Pelindaba Lavender
- Widening the market for Lopez Island Creamery throughout the Puget Sound region and beyond
