History of Lopez Island Creamery
Lopez Island Creamery was started in the mid 1990’s
by two women on Lopez Island in Washington’s San Juan
Islands who loved ice cream. They purchased some recipes
and a few pieces of equipment and started learning. As time
went by, they created, improved, modified and finally marketed
their product, selling ice cream cones at nearby fairs and
events.
The business steadily grew as the quality of the ice cream
became known. When the original owners sought to move on,
residents Jan and Jim Bruce discovered the availability of
the business and in 2004 they became the new owners of
LOPEZ ISLAND CREAMERY. They have made it their goal to widen
the market into more fine retail stores and the best restaurants
while keeping the superb quality of the original product
using only the
best possible ingredients. That means whenever possible only
natural ingredients are used. The cream comes from cows raised
in the Pacific Northwest. The chocolate
comes from France, vanilla from Mexico, cinnamon
from Indonesia, pecans from Texas and berries from nearby
Skagit Valley. Today LOPEZ ISLAND CREAMERY ice cream is available
at more locations in Northwest Washington then ever before.
More fairs, festivals and other events will experience the
smooth, fresh richness of one of the finest treats you’ll
ever taste. The mere mention of LOPEZ ISLAND CREAMERY ice
cream will bring oohs! and ahs! from those who have had the
experience.
One of the most exciting events of 2005 was the opening
of the new factory at 3185 Fisherman
Bay Road, just south of Lopez Village on Lopez Island. In 2008, we expanded into the Seattle area placing our product into several fine food markets.
In 2010, we made the difficult decision to relocate to Anacortes, Washington. One of the deciding factors in this move was the desire to lessen our carbon footprint by decreasing the number of trips required to transport ingredients and the final procucts thereby lowering our fuel consumption. Our new location is still part of the San Juan Archipelago on Fidalgo Island but our hearts are still on Lopez Island.
